Getting paged to retrieve a mage to get paid

Niv, Seras, Victor, Hasan, and Nyna accepted a quest they were informed of by a concerned friend who commissioned them on behalf of a missing wizard and it's entourage.  They located a camp which seemed to contain a captured wizard when it was scouted out in secret by Victor. The enemies attacked the heroes as they approached and seemed well embunkered on the cliff side hill.  Through all of the proper responses and actions, they quickly made short work of the camp.  Only at the end they noticed the captured mage Victor had purposely stashed away pre combat seemed to be missing.  They heard an echoing laugh in their head upon their discovery that it was gone.  They did however bring back seven of the camp members for questioning.
