Columns line the main chamber of the Temple of Nethys in Dweomserstar, alternating black on the left, white on the right...then white on the left and black on the right. This combined with the black and white checkered tiles gave the chamber the appears of hidden pieces of wall or column that made Gnokivash's mind itch. He was here for the Trial of his God. Gnokivash would become a priest of any god, even if it was only a false priest. He didn't think it would really matter to Nethys, him being a wizard, as Nethys was the god of Magic and the duality of this god seemed to fit a priestly wizard rather well. He would take the trial and devote his life to spreading the word of Nethys if it meant he could achieve his goals. All his life Gnokivash watched the different faiths and the mindless masses that flocked to them and emptied their wallets at the clergy's feet. This would be him...once the trial was done.

Just walking into this temple seemed to be a trial in itself. The blending colors and shifting walls made Gnokivash feel sick. There was no one in the chamber. Just checker boards and black and white. At the end of the corridor, stood a marble altar with the same black and white pattern. Alone on the alter stood a chalice, half ivory, half obsidian. Gnokivash reached up to the altar, barely able to grab the cup and pulled it down to him. It was full to the brim with a dark liquid. Upon closer examination, the liquid appeared to have a smoky, oil like texture permeating through the dark. It gave off no odor.

Gnokivash raised the cup to his lips and drank deeply. Before he knew it, he felt as if something grabbed the back of his head and tilted the cup further, pouring the entire goblet down Gorkivash's throat. He choked and coughed but not a drop of the liquid missed his mouth. When the liquid was gone, the unseen presence vanished as well and the cup fell to the floor with a loud crash that echoed in the empty halls. Gnokivash stood for a moment, paralyzed up on his toes with his head pulled back. Then he fell into a crumpled, gnome sized heap and darkness washed over him.

Gnokivash found himself floating along the dividing line of a world of duality. To the left of him, a burning lake of fire and volcanic rock; to the right, a green, pristine paradise with sun beams floating among the clouds. Directly in front of him, growing larger and larger and filling his few, Gnokivash beheld a great two toned mask. He continued forward, toward the mouth of the mask, not being able to stop himself, he was consumed by the great black and white face. He felt the teeth of the mask bite down on his flesh, the skin ripping and the bones crunching. He was spit back out of the mask into blackness, where he was suddenly surrounded by a golden glow, restoring his broken body and mending the wounds. As soon as he was whole again, he was suddenly falling through the blackness and into a scorching lake of fire. His flesh seared and peeled away from his blackened bones. When he was ash and dust, the fire disappeared and the lake filled with cool, vibrant water that mixed with the ash and created his body whole again. For what seemed like eternity, Gnokivash's physical body was destroyed and made whole, destroyed and made whole, to the point where his mind began to fracture.

Then, all at once and outside of time, the blackness slowly faded. Gnokivash coughed and spit up black liquid from the depths of his lungs. His eyes opened to the Black and White chamber with the alter towering above him on the floor. He could see through the windows it was now the deep darkness of late night and someone had been into the building to lite the candles on the columns. He picked himself off the floor and all at once the memory of a thousand deaths and rebirths filled his mind, and the fissure grew slightly. Nethys had shown Gnokivash true power. The power to create and the power to destroy, and the will to do either. Gnokivash smiled. For the first time in his life he had fully embraced a God and he could feel the power radiate through him. He did not feel as if he was still there just to embrace Nethys in name only, but he believed in the deity, he felt Nethys, in his core and Gnokivash knew, his true path to power had just begun. He was now a priest of Nethys. A false priest, maybe, but that did not matter. His path was now ahead of him.
