This a mini-campaign I ran on the old DS boards. I can't think of many players around today that took part in it.
The following is known to PCs:
~400 years ago a 'great freeze' occurred almost over night. Much of the cold north was rendered uninhabitable to even the hardiest of creatures (including many typically accustomed to harsh cold). To this day the cause of this remains a mystery.
Deep in the north was the settlement known and Northpoint, known mainly for its mine renown for producing some of the largest gems and vast quantities of gold.
Recently, for reasons unknown, the ice has started to recede and a local merchant looks to reopen the mine. Adventurers are tasked with travelling to Northpoint to acquire some items to trade for the deed to the mine.
This is DM only knowledge:
the great freeze was caused when curious miners breached a large sphere underground that turns out was the 'comet' that imprisoned pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Xhamen-Dor . This is made of a unknown material that is very difficult to damage. Inside was supernatural ice to help trap Xhamen-Dor and the effects spread when the miners managed to open a small section of the massive sphere.
as people approach the north they will find necromatic aura if they detect magic, faint at first, overwhelming in the mine itself. on the off chance they have undead with them they will be drawn to the mine (an undead lords companion for example) and could disappear in the night for example. Xhamen-Dor has been drawing undead to the mine to further break the prison so it can escape.
The journey will be perilous, natural hazards from the cold, A complete lack of vegetations/animals (starvation is a threat, as is freezing if they do not bring some form of heat), supernatural cold posing threats even to those using endure elements, undead along the way, cultists of Xhamen-Dor, etc.
They will have to fight the undead in the mine then figure out how to get rid of the prison
