As the wreckage of the Maidenheart sank into the waters of the strait the survivors found themselves forced to retreat into the island's jungle, just ahead of the Chelish forces sent to scout the site of their ship's destruction. A lone halfling hung back to try to harry pursuit while the rest of the wounded and shell-shocked crew sought shelter, covering their backs as best they could. On the shore, the Chelish followed standard procedures for the terrain: scouts that disappeared into the jungle while the exploratory party stayed ashore. The natives, unsurprisingly, were hostile. The halfling sniped as best he could from the trees and wounded several soldiers before eventually being noticed, whereupon the entire squad fired upon his area before retreating to their boats and withdrawing. The jungle gnomes had arrived! Bearing with them, they carried the bloated and swiftly putrefying corpses of the Decanus' scouts. A paralyzing blowgun dart led to the halfling's swift capture, and subsequent transport to the underground village the gnomes had developed out of the island's natural cave systems for 'interrogation'. Much yammering in a language no one could understand and several minor acts of magic in front of most of the town later, the locals proclaimed that the Unbadook: the Sea Strider, had returned from across the endless ocean to save them from the great enemies. The rest of the survivors were brought to the village, gathered from the burial ground they had used to hide, and a great feast was had with many delicious vegetarian foods and psychedelic liquor brewed from jungle vines.
A few days later, a small group of crewmen accompanied by a jungle gnome spiritual leader and huntmaster set out into the jungle to gather materials for a plan. Stingfruit, Darkspuds, and Shrieksyrup were acquired, in hefty amounts, and a local Shadecat that had been gravely wounded on a recent Chelish hunt was saved from certain death and convinced to allow itself to be treated by the spiritual leader to heal the long term damage done to its body. Large amounts of poison were about to be prepared...
